If you’ve been car shopping lately, you may have been wondering which is better, Volkswagen or Honda vehicles? While both automakers are well-respected in the automotive industry, only one can be called the best. We’ll start out by revealing that Volkswagen is the top automotive manufacturer globally, based on revenue from 2020. Honda came in fifth on the list. We’re not surprised; it’s hard to beat VW’s combination of quality, comfort, and style evident at dealer showrooms like the one at the San Bernardino area Volkswagen dealership, CardinaleWay Volkswagen.
We believe the ideal way to determine which automaker is the best is to examine some competing VW and Honda models and see which one comes out on top.
The 2021 Volkswagen Jetta and the 2021 Honda Civic are compact sedans. The Jetta provides an incredible ride and a cabin with plenty of room to keep passengers comfortable. The Jetta has a starting Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $18,995. Civic buyers will have to lay out a bit more cash, as the model has an MSRP of $21,250. When you visit the Volkswagen dealership near San Bernardino, you won’t pay the MSRP. We use this figure to compare the relative prices of these two vehicles.
The Jetta’s turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine generates 147 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The standard engine under the hood of the Civic is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit that makes 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft. While the two engines have similar horsepower figures, the Jetta’s higher torque means it can send more power to the wheels than the Civic.
The 2021 Volkswagen Passat is a midsize sedan that goes head-to-head with the 2021 Honda Accord. Passat drivers love its smooth ride, while passengers appreciate its roomy cabin. The Passat features a great deal of trunk space, too. The Passat’s MSRP starts at $23,995, compared with $24,970 for the Accord, so Passat buyers will save some money.
The VW Passat is equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that develops 174 hp and 206 lb-ft of torque. The Honda Accord’s base turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine produces 192 hp and 192 lb-ft. The Passat’s higher torque makes it the more powerful sedan.
Volkswagen Tiguan vs Honda HR-V
The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan is a compact SUV that competes with the 2021 Honda HR-V. The Tiguan features exceptional driving dynamics and a long list of technology features. The VW Tiguan’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine puts out 184 hp and 221 lb-ft, easily besting the HR-V’s 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. It only develops 141 hp and 127 lb-ft.
Volkswagen Atlas vs Honda Pilot
Our final battle is between two midsize SUVs: the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas and the 2021 Honda Pilot. The Atlas will save buyers some money, with an MSRP that checks in at $31,545. The Pilot starts at $32,550, so Atlas buyers stand to save about a grand. In addition, the Atlas has a higher predicted reliability score than the Pilot, more comfortable seats, and a larger infotainment screen (6.5 inches vs. 5 inches). Atlas drivers will appreciate the optional Volkswagen Digital Cockpit and a Fender stereo system with 12 speakers.
