2017 Volkswagen Passat - Inland Empire VW Dealer
The 2017 Volkswagen Passat is the perfect car for those who want German engineering in an affordable midsize sedan. When asked the reasons they’re impressed with the Passat, shoppers at nearby Volkswagen Dealers reported they like the roomy seats, quiet and upmarket cabin, smooth ride and powerful available V6 engine. The Passat is a pleasure to drive, with satisfying driving dynamics that always delivers an enjoyable ride.
The 2017 Volkswagen Passat seats five and is available in four trim levels: S, R-Line, SE and SEL Premium. Front-wheel drive is standard across the board. Power is provided by a standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 170 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. According to Edmunds, this block was able to hit 60 mph from a standstill in 7.7 seconds, a great showing. EPA-estimated fuel economy is reported at 27 mpg combined (23 city/34 highway).*
The SE and SEL Premium trims get an available 3.6-liter V-6 generating 280 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, teamed with a quick-shifting six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DSG) with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Edmunds testing revealed this powerplant took just 6.4 seconds to make the zero to 60 mph sprint. Fuel economy checks in at 23 mpg combined (20 city/28 highway).
Kelley Blue Book praised the Passat’s performance, writing: “Its sophisticated highway ride is simultaneously comfortable and connected, no small trick. Yet the Passat is also playful, and when the situation calls for it this Volkswagen shows an athletic side that's uncommon for this class."
Inside, you’ll find a classy interior that’s luxurious without being ostentatious. As you’d expect, Volkswagen constructed the cabin with high-quality materials, and the layout is extremely well-organized. The 6.3-inch infotainment screen is easy to use and the smartphone integration is first-rate.
The front-seats are extremely comfortable. There’s ample legroom in the backseat, which means just about all passengers can ride in the back in comfort, and there’s no problem installing a rear-facing safety seat for the kids. Trunk space is generous, with 15.9 cubic feet of space for hauling groceries or DIY home supplies. Larger items are easily accommodated, thanks to the Passat’s 60/40-split rear seats.
Safety gear that comes standard with the 2017 Volkswagen Passat includes antilock disc brakes, stability control, traction control, side airbags for the front, front and rear side curtain airbags, a rearview camera, and forward collision warning with automatic braking. Available options include VW’s Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert and Lane Assist.
Also available is the Car-Net telematics system, which features automatic crash notification, remote vehicle access, roadside assistance, speed alerts, stolen vehicle location, and geo-fencing. The latter allows parents to set geographic limits for teen drivers via an online map. The owner receives a text or email alert when the driver crosses one of the boundaries.
The IIHS gave the Passat its highest score of Good in all crash tests, including the small-overlap and moderate-overlap front-impact, side-impact, roof strength and seat/head restraint tests.
